OpenAI is preparing to introduce a new feature in ChatGPT that will permit adult-themed interactions for users who complete age verification. This development was shared by OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, in a post on X, announcing the planned rollout of age-gating in December.
"As we expand age-gating and adhere to our principle of treating adult users like adults, we will allow more mature content, including erotica for verified adults," said Altman. Earlier indications from OpenAI suggested that developers might soon create "mature" apps for ChatGPT, contingent on the establishment of proper age verification and control measures.
This move aligns with trends seen at other companies; for instance, Elon Musk's xAI has already ventured into this space by launching flirty AI companions that appear as 3D anime avatars in the Grok app.
Beyond introducing erotica, OpenAI aims to release an updated ChatGPT version that aligns more closely with what users appreciated about GPT-4o. After users expressed dissatisfaction with GPT-5 for being less personable, OpenAI reinstated GPT-4o as an alternative.
Altman explained that initial restrictions on ChatGPT were set to prioritize mental health but acknowledged these made the chatbot less enjoyable and effective for users without such concerns. As a remedy, OpenAI has launched tools designed to better identify users in mental distress.
Additionally, OpenAI has announced the formation of an "expert council on well-being and AI" to address sensitive and complex scenarios in AI development. The council features eight researchers and tech wellness experts. However, as noted by Ars Technica, it lacks specialists in suicide prevention, despite recent calls from experts for OpenAI to enhance safety measures for users experiencing suicidal thoughts.
